“The American flutist Andrea Brachfeld has recorded an impressive new album with her quartet Insight. She uses a wide variety of flutes from the normal C flute and alto flute to various bamboo flutes, which contribute to an exciting touch of world music. Their trio is spectacular, especially pianist Bill O’Connell impresses with gripping uptempo improvisations. Andrea Brachfeld has tailored eight pieces with different characters to suit her and her band, modern jazz with a driving tempo that allows the flute to have light, floating lines and precise landings in topic heads. In “Child of the Earth” (with spoken words by Andrea Brachfeld) the rhythm section can live to the full. The ballad “Quingaulit” unfolds a special atmosphere with the lower-tuned, always airy-sounding alto flute. “The Hut Song” catches the band’s ears with Colombian clay and African bamboo flutes with a Latin vibe. A very coherent production!”
